The Lowest-Rated Game For 2023 Is Currently The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum finally came out after several months of waiting. And critics claim that it is awful. Gollum is currently the worst-rated game of 2023 on two review aggregation websites.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum for the PS5 is at the bottom of Metacritic’s list of 296 games released so far this year. Visit OpenCritic, and you’ll find that many websites there are giving utterly appalling reviews.
Ourselves included. Ben Sledge said it straight: Lord of the Rings: Gollum is “really fucking boring,” with dated visuals, bad facial animations, flat textures, and bizarre physics that result in some fascinating glitches.
“Gollum’s legs hang rigid when he clings to a beam, his hair clips through his forehead regularly, and the entire lower half of his face sometimes moves instead of just his mouth, with audio arriving seconds later,” In his critique, he stated.

Regarding the tale, “There’s no narrative tension; the first half of the game revolves around simply ‘escaping Mordor,’ something that we already know Gollum did, which isn’t expanded upon in any meaningful way.” They give this review 1.5 stars out of 5 due to the dated stealth mechanics and conversation options that have no bearing on the plot’s resolution.
Other websites were even harsher. “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a broken mess of a game. There are barely any redeeming qualities to be found amidst what can only be described as a massive missed opportunity,” Push Square gave it a two-out-of-ten rating. “There is some serious potential in a single-player linear Lord of the Rings experience like this, but with outrageously dated level design, clunky controls, a severe lack of polish, muddy and unimpressive graphics, and a dull story, Gollum completely misses the mark.”
“The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, like the titular character, is ugly, malformed, and infested with bugs,” GInfinity wrote, whereas Press Start Australia stated that there were no positive experiences to be found.
Clive’ N’ Wrench, a Switch game released in February, currently holds the dubious distinction of being the second-worst game of the year, according to Metacritic. With notable Hollywood actors like Chuck Norris, Michael Madsen, and Vanilla Ice (Danny Trejo is also in it, but he had a much better role in Far Cry 6), the cooperative first-person shooter Crime Boss: Rockay City takes third place.
Redfall, which made a big splash earlier this month, is the fifth-worst game of the year, emphasizing how awful Gollum is.
